Job Description
Remote is seeking a Technical Documentation Writer to join the team at Home Affairs to review, update and maintain a suite of security-related technical documents supporting the Department’s operational and policy objectives. The role involves translating complex technical security concepts into clear, concise and audience-appropriate language, while ensuring compliance with corporate branding, classification and publishing standards. Responsibilities include maintaining technical security policies, equipment guides and lists, technical recommendations for security environments, risk assessment templates, and user-facing security guidance. Role Description
Key Responsibilities
- Ability to work to a time line, KPIs include: 95% on-time delivery,
< 2 % post-release errors.
- Review existing security-related documents (e.g. policies, procedures, system design guides, risk assessments) and produce updated versions that reflect current technology, threat landscape, and legislative changes.
- Liaise with Subject-Matter Experts (SMEs) - technical security experts, security risk, existing policy mandates, with reference to government policies.
- Convert technical jargon into plain-English without losing precision, using the Department's Plain Language Guidelines. Conduct self-reviews and coordinate peer-reviews; incorporate feedback from SMEs and the Communications/Brand team before final sign-off.
- When required, deliver briefings or workshops to internal teams on how to use or maintain the documentation.
- Provide regular status updates (e.g., weekly progress, risk log) to the relevant Director in charge.
- Store and maintain documents in the approved content-management system (e.g. objective) with proper metadata, audit trails, and access controls.
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrated understanding of government security concepts
- Proven experience producing technical documentation for government or regulated environments; strong command of plain-language techniques
- MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with document-management platforms (SharePoint, Confluence)
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent document streams, meet deadlines, and track version history.
- Strong interpersonal skills for extracting information from SMEs and presenting to non-technical audiences.
- Meticulous in applying branding, classification markings, and citation standards.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience with security architecture, network security, or cyber-incident response.
- Published technical guides, white-papers, or standards
- Experience with formal review processes (e.g., Commonwealth Style Manual).
