Job Description

Remote is seeking a Network Engineer to join the team in ASD. The Network Engineer will contribute to the investigation, diagnosis and resolution of network issues, providing advice on preventative strategies and supporting the design and implementation of network changes and maintenance routines.

The role will involve applying knowledge of Defence and industry data, voice and audio networking devices, procedures and technologies to support reliable network operations. The Network Engineer will monitor, measure, optimise and report on network load, performance and security, while supporting the installation, maintenance and acceptance of new or updated network components, services and applications. The role will also include carrying out agreed network and system software maintenance tasks and automating routine networking activities using standard tools and scripting. ( LH-06009)

Role Description

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Accountable to contribute to the investigation, diagnosis and resolution of network issues and provide advice on preventative strategies. 
  • Use experience to design and implement network changes and maintenance routines. 
  • Apply knowledge to explain and capitalise on the capabilities of current Defence and industry data, voice and audio networking devices and procedures. 
  • Investigate and resolve network problems using expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action. 
  • Monitor, measure, optimise and report on load, performance and security of networks. 
  • Deliver the installation/de-installation, maintenance and acceptance of new and updated components, services and value add applications. 
  • Carries out agreed network and system software maintenance tasks. Automates routine networking tasks using standard tools and scripting. 

Technical skills

  • Degree in Computer Science, IT or equivalent work experience of 3+ years.
  • Intermediate understanding of network fundamentals, such as protocols, architectures, devices and topologies.

Essential criteria

  • Availability management: Level 4 (SFIA)

Analyses service and component availability, reliability, maintainability and serviceability. Contributes to the availability management process and its operation. Performs defined availability management tasks. Ensures that services and components meet and continue to meet all of their agreed performance targets and service levels. Implements arrangements for disaster recovery and documents recovery procedures. Conducts testing of recovery procedures.

  • IT infrastructure: Level 4 (SFIA)

Provides technical expertise to enable the correct application of operational procedures. Contributes to the planning and implementation of infrastructure maintenance and updates. Implements agreed infrastructure changes and maintenance routines. Uses infrastructure management tools to determine load and performance statistics. Configures tools and/or creates scripts to automate the provisioning, testing and deployment of new and changed infrastructure. Maintains operational procedures and checks that they are executed following agreed standards. Investigates and enables the resolution of operational issues. Provides reports and proposals for improvement, to specialists, users and managers.

  • Problem management: Level 3 (SFIA)

Investigates problems in systems, processes and services. Assists with the implementation of agreed remedies and preventative measures.

  • Systems installation and removal: Level 4 (SFIA)

Undertakes or supervises complex installations and de-installations of systems or components, including handover to the client. Develops procedures and standards for installation and handover to maintain and improve the installation service. Schedules installation work around client priorities and resource availability. Ensures adherence to established safety and quality procedures.
